Het bestaande gebouw van een voormalige fabriek, reeds omgebouwd en uitgebreid met woningen en een sporthal op het dak met twee expressieve trappenhuizen staan in het bestemmingsgebied ‘Selzerbeek’ en grenst aan het bestemmingsgebied ‘Kern Vaals’. De opdracht was het gebouw te verkennen en te onderzoek of het mogelijk is de sportschool gelegen op de 3^e verdieping van het voormalige industriegebouw en de sporthal te transformeren in woningen en in fase twee samen met de stadsbouwmeester tot een positief advies te komen.

Om iedere woning een buitenruimte te geven hebben wij een nieuwe geïsoleerde lichte gevel rond om de sporthal geplaatst met baksteenstripplaten in de kleur van het bestaande metselwerk van de woningen op de ondersten twee verdiepingen. De buitenruimtes en de kozijnen zijn in positie en stijl gekopieerd van deze woningen.  Hierdoor worden de twee volumes met elkaar verwoven. Rondom een groot atrium in het midden van de sporthal met een groot daklicht en tropische planten zijn de entrees van de woningen bedacht. De woningen zullen de kwaliteit van familiewoningen hebben met minimaal twee slaapkamers.

At the Weaving Mill

The existing building of a former factory, which has already been converted and expanded with housing and a sports hall on the roof with two expressive stairwells, are located in the 'Selzerbeek' zoning area and adjacent to the 'Kern Vaals' zoning area. The assignment was to explore the building and investigate whether it is possible to transform the gym located on the 3rd floor in the former industrial building and the sports hall on top of it into housing. The second fase was to work the plans out together with the city architect of Vaals, so that it will be positive for the surrounding.

To give each house an outdoor space, we have placed a new insulated, light façade around the sports hall with brick strip plates in the colour of the existing masonry of the houses on the lower two floors. The outdoor spaces and window frames are copied in position and style from these houses.  As a result, the two volumes are intertwined. The entrances to the houses have been designed around a large atrium in the middle of the sports hall with a large skylight and tropical plants. Most of the homes will have the quality of family homes with at least two bedrooms.
